Introduction

The International Day of Yoga, celebrated annually on June 21st, is a day dedicated to the ancient practice of yoga, which promotes physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Initiated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, this day recognizes yoga’s universal appeal and its contribution to global health and harmony. As millions of people around the globe roll out their mats and join in the practice, we all should be at the forefront of spreading awareness and educating people about the benefits of yoga.


The Origins of International Day of Yoga

The Proposal

The idea of an International Day of Yoga was proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014. He highlighted yoga as an invaluable gift from India’s ancient tradition that embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment, and harmony between man and nature.

UN Resolution

On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. This date, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, holds special significance in many parts of the world. The resolution was endorsed by a record 177 member states, reflecting the global appeal and significance of yoga.


2024 Theme: Yoga for Self and Society

In honor of the 10th International Day of Yoga, the theme for this year is "Yoga for Self and Society." Yoga, a transformative practice, embodies the harmony between mind and body, the equilibrium of thought and action, and the unity of restraint and fulfillment. It integrates the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional realms, providing a holistic approach to health and well-being that fosters inner peace amidst life's challenges. Today, we celebrate its profound capacity to bring about personal and societal transformation.


The Essence of Yoga

Yoga serves as a potent tool for enhancing both mental and physical health, offering immediate psychological benefits such as reducing anxiety and stress while promoting emotional and social well-being. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in preventing and managing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory illnesses, and diabetes, which increasingly contribute to disability and premature mortality worldwide.

Physical Benefits

Yoga is renowned for its numerous physical benefits. Regular practice can improve flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance. It also aids in weight management, boosts cardiovascular health, and enhances respiratory function. Yoga poses (asanas) and sequences, such as the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar), are designed to work every part of the body.

Yoga is equally beneficial for mental health. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by promoting relaxation and mindfulness. Practices like meditation and controlled breathing (pranayama) calm the mind and improve focus and concentration. Yoga encourages a holistic approach to health, integrating body, mind, and spirit.

A study published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine found that regular yoga practice significantly improves cardiovascular health. The research, conducted over 12 weeks with participants practicing yoga thrice a week, showed reductions in blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and resting heart rate. Centuries ago one of the most popular Sanskrit poets Bhartrhari, while highlighting the specialty of Yoga, said:

धैर्यं यस्य पिता क्षमा च जननी शान्तिश्चिरं गेहिनीसत्यं सूनुरयं दया च भगिनी भ्राता मनः संयमः।शय्या भूमितलं दिशोSपि वसनं ज्ञानामृतं भोजनंएते यस्य कुटिम्बिनः वद सखे कस्माद् भयं योगिनः।।

Meaning that by regularly practising Yoga, a person can imbibe some very good qualities like courage which protects like a father, forgiveness as possessed by a mother & mental peace which becomes a permanent friend. Through regular practise of Yoga truth becomes our child, mercy our sister, self-control our brother, the earth becomes our bed & knowledge satiates our hunger.
