Antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global threat, rendering key treatments ineffective. Health Volunteers play a vital role in combating AMR through education, advocacy, and community engagement. By promoting responsible antimicrobial use and implementing preventive measures, they help preserve the efficacy of treatments, reduce the spread of resistant infections, and protect public health for future generations.

Youth Against AMR (YAAR)

Health Volunteers are actively engaged in a comprehensive range of activities to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). They conduct awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of AMR and the importance of responsible antimicrobial use. Through community education workshops, they teach infection prevention and control measures, proper hygiene, and the significance of completing prescribed antibiotic courses and distribute educational materials and hygiene supplies to support community health initiatives.
Through these multifaceted efforts, Health Volunteers are making a significant impact in the fight against AMR, safeguarding public health and preserving the efficacy of antimicrobials for future generations.

What is AMR?

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant global threat across human, animal, plant, food, and environmental sectors. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. This resistance renders antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents ineffective, making infections increasingly difficult or impossible to treat and heightening the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. The misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in humans, animals, and plants are accelerating the development and spread of AMR. In 2019, AMR was associated with 5 million deaths, with 1.3 million directly attributed to bacterial AMR.
